My Five Kitty Sketches were written in 1993, in the immediate instance for my niece, Rebekah Howell Bambenek, who was studying piano at the time. Thus, i attempted to write them at an intermediate level of difficulty. Each of the pieces was named for one of the cats that my wife and I had at the time. I wrote this suite also having in mind orchestrating them for performance by the Bloomington Pops Orchestra, conducted by my father, John Canfield, and in which I played as principal second violin for most of the existence of the orchestra. All five of these pieces were eventually performed in their orchestrated versions by that ensemble.
